The first was Spinoza: Liberator of God and Man in 1933, and the second was Spinoza Against the Rabbis in 1937. This new edition combines them both for the first time, newly typeset and designed. Written in the luminous, piercing style that has made Benjamin DeCasseres famous, you see in this book the mighty struggle of Spinoza with Intolerance, the serene pantheist at work polishing his lenses, and, above all, the interior of a mind, in eleven chapters, that is like an excursion of the Spirit of Man in high mental altitudes. Benjamin DeCasseres brings to the light in this book hitherto unknown aspects of the doctrines of Spinoza: his liberation of God from the shackles of anthropomorphism, his glorification of the Will-to-Power, and his divinization of the Ego of the individual man. In the chapter entitled “Anathema!” DeCasseres has with a dramatic power only equaled in the pages of Victor Hugo or Merejkovsky pictured the excommunication from the Jewish Church of Benedict de Spinoza. Spinoza, at last, lives in this book. Smith once described The Myth of Natural Rights as “a scathing, all-out attack.” This was not hyperbole. First published in 1983 by Loompanics Unlimited, L.A. Rollins’ incisive monograph sought not merely to dethrone the doctrine of natural law that had come to dominate libertarian discourse, but to upend the very foundations of moral philosophy. Describing himself as an “amoralist” and an “egoist of sorts,” Rollins echoed Stirner alone in his insouciant refusal to genuflect before the reigning pieties of intellectual fashion.
While few readers would embrace Rollins’ intractable moral skepticism, his short book struck a powerful chord. As the text was discussed and occasionally reviewed in marginal periodicals, it gathered an almost scandalous aura, eliciting both approbation and excoriation for its lacerating critique of natural rights theory – particularly as exposited by such libertarian luminaries as Murray Rothbard, Tibor Machan and Ayn Rand.
In 1985, The Myth of Natural Rights would become a central exhibit in a spirited debate that spanned several issues of Samuel Konkin’s New Libertarian magazine. Stirner. traces the development of relativist thinking as exemplified in the three philosophers of its title. Protagoras is the originator of relativism with his dictum “Man (the individual) is the measure of all things”. This in turn is taken up by Stirner and Nietzsche. Of the two, however, Stirner is by far the most consistent and for this reason Lachmann places him after Nietzsche in his account. For him Stirner surpasses Nietzsche by bringing Protagorean relativism to its logical conclusion in conscious egoism-the fulfilment of one’s own will.
In fact, he views Nietzsche as markedly inferior to Stirner both in respect to his style and the clarity of his thinking. “In contrast to Nietzsche’s work,” he writes, The Ego And Its Own “is written in a clear, precise form and language, though it avoids the pitfalls of a dry academic style. Its sharpness, clarity and passion make the book truly shattering and overwhelming.” Unlike Nietzsche’s, Stirner’s philosophy does not lead to the replacement of one religious “spook” by another, the substitution of the “Superman” for the Christian “God”. On the contrary, it makes “the individual’s interests the centre of the world.”
Intelligent, lucid and well-conceived, Lachmann’s essay throws new light on Stirner’s ideas.
—Sidney E. Parker, Ego, No 7, 1986

“Man is the measure of all things.”
These words are written over the portal to individualism and egoism.
Behind that entrance the ways divide.
One way leads to the state as the necessary prerequisite for the existence of the individual. With the intention of developing a higher form of state and society and of mankind in general, it leads to the cultivation of separate individuals who direct the masses as leaders. At all times, however, the idea of the “state,” “community” or “humanity” stands as a goal at the end of the way. This was the path taken by Protagoras and Friedrich Nietzsche.
The second way rises up more steeply and more boldly than the first. “As each thing appears to each man, so is it for him.”
Via the dissolution of the “state” and of “humanity,” it leads to the possibility of giving the individual the right to decide his own values, of making the individual’s interests the centre of his own world and making him master over the things in it. This was the path taken by Max Stirner.
OS CANGACEIROS was a group of delinquents with nothing but contempt for the self-sacrificial ideology practiced by "specialists in armed struggle". The distinction lies in the fact that the Free Spirits did not see the millennium as something that was going to come soon, but as something that already existed within them. Their perspective was not apocalyptic — aiming toward a future end of the world — but rather based in the immediate present. This is why the Free Spirits, while still using religious language, actually attacked the foundations of religion: dependence on an external supernatural power, hope in a heavenly future, faith in an external source of salvation.

Wolfi Landstreicher is the editor of the insurrectionary anarchist journal Willful Disobedience and publisher of Venomous Butterfly Publications. What is Man's Destiny? by Laurance Labadie introduction by Mark A. Sullivan 5.5″ x 8.5″, Saddle-stitched Limited to 66 copies.
Laurance Labadie begins with the thesis that the State was born under conditions of scarcity, and survived at the expense of other states and its own subjects. Labadie applied egoist Benjamin R. Tucker’s critique of monopoly to a world Tucker declared doomed. Going beyond the “plumb line” of his mentor, Labadie’s portrayal of “civilization” before close of the Twentieth Century is a rival to any nightmare of Orwell. Laurance was the son of anarchist labor advocate and publisher Joseph A. Labadie, and the last true connection to Benjamin Tucker and the group of individualists known as the “Boston Anarchists.” “What Is Man’s Destiny?” was first published in the fourth quarter, 1970 issue of The Journal of Human Relations. The current form is a facsimile of Mark A. Sullivan’s pamphlet edition released in 1975, which included his typed and mimeographed introduction stapled to actual offset prints of the original essay. At the end of the essay is an excerpt from economist Hugo Bilgram’s book The Cause of Business Depressions, and then an editorial statement on that excerpt to place it within the context of Labadie’s essay. The latter was probably written by Don Werkheiser, who was editor of the journal from 1968 to 1971. Mark A. Sullivan published the egoist/gay/anarchist journal The Storm from 1976 to 1988. He was also heavily involved in the Mackay Society, which was dedicated to publish and distribute the work of German anarchist John Henry Mackay. His introduction to “What is Man’s Destiny?,” dated November 1975, was completed only four months after Laurance died. Sullivan would later expand this introduction, with the help of Mildred J. Loomis of the School of Living, into the essay “Laurance Labadie: Keeper Of The Flame.” It was included in a 1986 collection of essays titled Benjamin R. Tucker and the Champions of Liberty. Sullivan co-edited the book with Mike Coughlin and Charles H. Hamilton. W. K. Paterson’s 1971 The Nihilistic Egoist: Max Stirner. While Paterson undertook to review Der Einzige as substantive philosophical discourse, paradoxically, and theologically, he would conclude that Stirner was doing metaphysics, to the point of a solipsistic frivolity.
This study examines the fascinating but ultimately unsuccessful, if not buffoonish, case against Stirner by Paterson. I conclude that we should rethink Stirner not as metaphysician but as social critic and educator, a “root”, ground-level or primal thinker, more relevant today than ever. And that his ideas and principles are ready to be spread and put to work now in criticism, current events and art.
In this revision my purpose is to de-trivialize Stirner, tweak the paradigm further and introduce new material, with a view to reviving Saint Max where he belongs - in the company of heretics such as Chamfort, Nietzsche, Mark Twain, Ambrose Bierce, George Orwell, Joseph Heller and George Carlin, to name a few.
written/edited by Trevor Blake

216 pages, 8vo,
ISBN 978-1944651015.
Published by OVO.

One hundred years of Max Stirner in print, beginning in 1845 with the publication of "The Ego and Its Own." Exhaustively researched. It can also be described as one of the most misread, misinterpreted and misunderstood books in the history of modern Western thought. This should not be unexpected. Subversive, radical and extreme texts will always obtain hostile receptions from those targeted by their critiques, whether the critiques are accurate and justified or not. The book is rather simply - though very cleverly - written with very little use of technical terminology. And Stirner goes out of his way in an attempt to use common language wherever possible, though he often does so very creatively and idiosyncratically. It is also a fairly demanding text for anyone (including nearly every contemporary reader) who is unfamiliar with the cultural background within which it was conceived, written and published. It is possible for it to be read and appreciated without knowledge of this background, however the prospect of adequate understanding - not only of the central points but also their extensive implications - definitely recedes the less a reader is familiar with topics like nominalism, phenomenology, hermeneutics, analytical and dialectical logic, and critiques of religion, ontology, epistemology, ideology and language that were current in Stirner's day. From the moment Stirner's text first appeared, it directly and fundamentally challenged every religion, philosophy and ideology. It didn't just politely challenge every existing historical religion, philosophy and ideology, which would already have been enough to have made its author many enemies. It also blatantly and scathingly challenged every existing contemporary religion, philosophy and ideology of the day.
In John Moore's final essay, he assembles the ideas of Hakim Bey, Max Stirner, Julia Kristeva and others into an insurrectionary ars w'tae which is at the same time an ars poetica --wagering that insurrectionary projects that begin with the individual's self-assertion take place on the chaotic and abundant grounds of nothingness and is expressed by poetic revolt. It is a statement that the individual is the measure of all things and establishes the foundation that existentialism, egoism, and nihilism are built on. Every group, every collectivity, demands collaboration with a set of rules and expectation, with a morality. Stirner provokes us to acknowledge our own capacity, as well as the capacities of those around us. Previously only available in English through a translation from 1907 (which tragically titled the book The Ego and his Own)--a translation that removed some of the biting humor and occasional crudities that make Stirner more fun to read--this translation by Wolfi Landstreicher corrects that, updates the language in general, and removes the confusion involved with using terms that have changed in meaning in the intervening years. From the translators introduction: I made this translation for those who rebel against all that is held sacred, against every society, every collectivity, every ideology, every abstraction that various authorities, institutions, or even other individuals try to impose on them as a "higher power," for those who know how to loot from a book like this, to take from it those conceptual tools and weapons that they can use in their own defiant, laughing, mocking self-creation, to rise up above and against the impositions of the mass. In other words I did this translation for those who know how to treat a book not as a sacred text to either be followed or hermeneutically dissected, but as an armory or a toolbox from which to take whatever will aid them in creating their lives, their enjoyments...

Not the cruelty — the flinch. "You cannot say that wolves generally eat lambs and that it is their duty as wolves," he complained, "without sending a shudder of horror through the crowd." On Christianity, lifted from his late and unrepentant Le chemin de velours, is the Symbolist master of "the dissociation of ideas" laying his scalpel against the one idea no one is permitted to touch: the universal, obligatory morality of pity that even Christianity's loudest enemies, he noticed, take pains to leave intact — would sooner make heavier than lighten.

His quarrel is not with faith but with sentimentality, with a "middling happiness" that sacrifices liberty first and calls the bargain salvation. ("The terrestrial ideal of humanity smells of the pigsty, as its celestial ideal smelt of the stable.") He has no patience for the patrician who kneels to the religion of slaves—"the apostates of their caste and their race"—and a cold admiration for the few who dare to say "My justice is my strength," and who prove it. Readers of this catalog will know the phrase. Aldington's faithful rendering of «ma justice, c'est ma force» is, idiomatically, nothing other than Might is Right—the motto Max Stirner armed and Arthur Desmond made notorious. Gourmont reaches the same precipice by the velvet path: not a manifesto, but an essayist's quiet, surgical dissociation of a thing his century had glued shut.

The translator is no accident. Richard Aldington—Imagist, early hand at The Egoist under Dora Marsden—moved in exactly the milieu of intellectual independence and cheerful heresy Gourmont's prose demands, and would go on to render the Frenchman for English readers at length. (Gourmont, returning the favor across the Channel, had introduced France to Benjamin DeCasseres—no stranger to this catalog.) This edition annotates Gourmont's idiosyncratic vocabulary—his pre-biological race, his aristocratic liberty, his juridical equity—restoring the precision the polemic runs on, and that a careless century has smeared.
