New Australia was a utopian socialist settlement in Paraguay created by the New Australian Movement. The colony was officially founded on 28 September 1893 as Colonia Nueva Australia.
The New Australia Co-operative Settlement Association, known in short as the New Australia Movement, was founded by William Lane in 1892. Lane was a prominent figure in the Australian labor movement and had founded Australia's first labor newspaper—The Worker—in 1890. A split in the Australian labor movement between those who went on to form the Australian Labor Party spurred Lane's intent to found a socialist utopia outside Australia.
Billy Lane's enthusiastic disposition for teetotalling and communism rubbed many of the young men the wrong way, and the colony ended up kicking him out of his own colony! Lane's exploits were reported in the newspapers often alongside reports of the labor activism and radical publishing work of Arthur Desmond.
The slogan featured on the shirt is the dedication in the 1936 book William Lane and the Australian Labor Movement by Lloyd Roos. The clasping hands and name of the colony is taken from the design of a rare Peso bill issued in the colony.
