They Marched Under The Banner: A Hardline/Militant Vegan Reader
Hardline was one of the most polarizing ideologies to emerge from the anarchist and
animal rights movements of the late 1980s. With its uncompromising philosophy and
rejection of “sXe unity” and the prevailing “politically correct” ideals, Hardline
attracted no shortage of detractors.
This collection includes many of the Hardline zines published during the early to mid-
1990s, including several that have been unavailable for decades. It begins with
Vanguard #1—the Hardline primer and manifesto—and also features Praxis, Destroy
Babylon, Declaration, Defense, Rescue, Survival, and many more.
Also included is a smaller selection of militant vegan zines that rejected the Hardline
premise but, in my view, ran parallel to it and had more in common with Hardline than
either side might have been willing to admit.
Rounded out with an appendix of flyers, booklets, catalogs, and other ephemera.
Between the Destroy Babylon Compendium and They Marched Under The Banner, there
is no more complete collection of Hardline material available anywhere.
